Our Solutions

Chromate Conversion Coating

Chromate conversion coating protects aluminum surfaces from corrosion while creating an ideal foundation for paints, primers and other secondary finishes. Specified throughout aerospace, defense, electronics and industrial manufacturing, this finish delivers both dependable corrosion protection and excellent paint adhesion.

At RIE Coatings, we provide chromate conversion coatings for customers who require specification compliance and consistent performance. Our controlled finishing processes support high-performance applications where quality and repeatability are essential.

Ensure Mission-Critical Compliance With MIL-DTL-5541

For aerospace and defense manufacturers, MIL-DTL-5541 remains the benchmark specification for chromate conversion coatings on aluminum. This standard ensures components deliver the required corrosion protection and performance for demanding service environments.

MIL-DTL-5541 recognizes both Type I and Type II conversion coatings. Type I coatings use hexavalent chromium chemistry and remain specified for applications requiring the highest levels of corrosion protection. Type II coatings utilize trivalent chromium chemistry and are often selected to support evolving environmental requirements.

RIE has the expertise, controls, and documentation systems required to process chromate conversion coatings in accordance with any program or customer specification. Our AS9100D-certified quality system ensures traceability and supports the documentation needs of regulated industries. As a result, our partners receive complete, audit-ready data packages that offer clear proof of compliance.

Core Benefits of Our Chromating Process

Superior paint and adhesive bonding

A chromate conversion layer creates a micro-roughened surface that promotes strong mechanical adhesion between the substrate and subsequent primers, paints and coatings. This enhanced adhesion ensures the finish resists chipping, peeling and flaking, even when subjected to vibration, impact or thermal cycling.

The finish preserves the aluminum substrate’s conductivity, meeting MIL-DTL-5541 requirements for electronics housings, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and grounding.

Chromate conversion coatings are suitable for a wide range of components, from complex aerospace assemblies and military hardware to precision-machined industrial parts.

An AS9100D-Certified, ITAR-Registered Partner

We build compliance into every stage of our process. Our AS9100D certification and ITAR registration reflect a commitment to process control, quality assurance and documented traceability throughout production. By managing surface preparation, processing, inspection and quality verification in-house, we maintain control over every stage of the finishing process.

This integrated approach supports consistent outcomes while providing customers with the documentation required for regulated programs. For our customers, this means less logistical complexity, shorter lead times and a single point of accountability for the entire process. Our team works closely with customers to determine the appropriate chemical conversion coating class for their specific performance, compliance and application requirements.
