Quality specifications improve an uncoated item by adding certain characteristics to the part with a properly chosen and applied coating. Corrosion resistance, wear resistance, lubrication, anti-gall, anti-stick, and color are major improvements that can be engineered into the manufacture of an item. Consideration must be given to use conditions, base metal, configuration, clearance, tolerance, and economy before creating a written specification.
